dual boot xp unstable

Asked by the lemming

I am unable to install a stable ubuntu 7.04 with Windows XP.

I have managed to install 7.04 but I get the following issues:

During initial boot up I would get the following error request-module: runaway loop modprobe binf mt-ffff

I then tried to boot into XP and nothing happened.I then tried to boot XP in safe mode and nothing happened.I then tried to boot into XP, got the welcome screen which then changed to the ubuntu screen which loaded ubuntu instead I then finally got into XP but some how my network card was affected and I had to tinker around to get back onto the internet.

Installing ubuntu changed my slave drive and took about 40gb without me understanding why or how this happened

Sometimes it will not load and I have to switch off and try again.

When looking as screen savers the screen would go blank and then ask me for name and password before returning to the desktop.
When I went into a folder to look around (XP folder) the entire operating system froze. I took the dog for a walk for well over an hour and returned to a frozen screen.

When on the desktop the entire system would freeze and I would not be able to use the mouse or hit any keystrokes. All I could do is hit the Off button on my computer.

Being new to Linux style operating systems, is this a normal introduction or have I been very unlucky?

I have tried the 6.06 Live CD but I could not watch any video footage or listen to any audio.

I really would appreciate any advice as to why all this may be happening.

My computer specs are:

AMD 64 3400+ processor 2205MHz
2gb RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Graphics card
1 DVD Re-write drive
1 DVD Read only drive
2 Hard Drives 112GB
2 External Hard Drives (USB)
Belkin 802.11g wireless card model F5D 7000uk
Medion TV-Tuner 7134 MK 2/3

I have tried the forums but have been unsuccessful so far. Here is a link to the questions that I have asked

http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php?searchid=19823321

I really would appreciate some help and advice to get ubuntu up and running because I have read several good reviews and have had some personal recomendations from people in the IT world.

Thank You

Thanks for your question. I ask you to start with the ubuntu live cd without insert the usb external disk. We try to understand exactly the partition configuration of your system. Thanks

Thanks for your question.

I can't access your thread on ubuntuforums.org, please see if the url changed.

We might need more information on your system configuration. As this is obviously a bug, we highly appreciate your help.

Please boot into your ubuntu system:

1) Provide the output of the command "sudo fdisk -l"
2) Provide the content of "/boot/grub/menu.lst" (you can do that by running "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"
3) Provide the content of "/var/log/boot"
4) run "dmesg > content_file" and provide the content of "content_file"

I tried to follow your instructions for question 3 but wasn't sure how to go about it. However I did click around into a file called

boot [Read Only} (/var/log) - gedit

and I was presented with the following text
(Nothing has been logged yet.)

I tried to follow the instructions of question 4

4) run "dmesg > content_file" and provide the content of "content_file"

But I could only get information if I typed dmesg

Here are the results.

Thanks for your answer. We need to clarify some things, as your log looks quite o.k..

1)
> During initial boot up I would get the following error request-module: runaway loop modprobe binf mt-ffff

O.k., after a little while I found you meant: runaway loop modprobe binfmt -ffff
I was not familar with that. In my opinion you -unfortunatly- hit a bug. I'd like to encourage you to file a bug at package linux-source-2.6.20. Just click here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+filebug

2)
> I then tried to boot into XP, got the welcome screen which then changed to the ubuntu screen which loaded
> ubuntu instead I then finally got into XP but some how my network card was affected and I had to tinker
> around to get back onto the internet.

Is this bug reproducable? Did you make a soft- or a hard-reboot?
If -and *only* if- it's reproducable, please file a bug at package grub: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+filebug

3)
> Installing ubuntu changed my slave drive and took about 40gb without me understanding why or how this happened

What do you mean by "changed"? According to your logs, Linux was installed on your first drive. So I assume that's your "master" drive. There are no linux partitions on drive hdb.

4)
> Sometimes it will not load and I have to switch off and try again.

If that happens regulary, please select "Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (recovery mode)" and have a look *where* it stops working.

5)
> When I went into a folder to look around (XP folder) the entire operating system froze. I took the dog for a walk for well over an hour
> and returned to a frozen screen.

Where you running windows, or did that happen when you where exploring a mounted windows device? Is that bug reproducable?

6)
> Being new to Linux style operating systems, is this a normal introduction or have I been very unlucky?

I'd say quite unlucky. :-) Most time we're only able to hunt bugs with a error message, or if they're reproducable. That makes it quite ambitious.

> I have tried the 6.06 Live CD but I could not watch any video footage or listen to any audio.

If "any" means MP3 and AVI, it's because of legal issues. You'll find more information on http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/.

Can you help with this problem?
