Start up error wont enter rescue even though it says so

Asked by Hayden Calnan

Hey when i try to start up my brothers computer it says
"error; attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0' . Entering rescue mode..."
i have tried entering the grub menu by pressing shift during startup but no luck it has just been stuck loading.
If i could get someone to get me instructions on what to do i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

BTW
My brothers computer has been broken like this for quiet some time so impediment help would be greatly liked by me!

Sounds like a bad hard drive. I'd start by resetting the BIOS to failsafe settings the reconfigure

If you boot to the Ubuntu install desktop, I you can run an fsck on the partition (with it unmounted). You may also want to grab the Ultimate Boot CD and check the drive using the manufacturers tools. It accommodates the major companies.

Can you help with this problem?
