Skype Hardware-To USB or not to USB

Asked by Nigel Hollick

Using UBUNTU 8.10 and would like to use skype. Have not yet bought Headset or seperate Mic or cam. Could anybody advise what would be the best setup. I made an initial foray to the local shop but got frightened off by the available USBhardware having only MS Win drivers.

I have a seperate sound card that indicates that one of the minijack ports is labeled mic in but have never used it. C-Media wav device.

Any and all advice would be most welcome.

Nigel

Initially I used a headset and microphone but discovered that these were not necessary.

You can use a webcam with mic built in such as the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 which is an excellent camera that works well with Skype. The driver for this type of camera (uvc) is built into the kernel so all you need to do is plug it in and set up your Skype account. The inbuilt mic is set up via the Skype configuration. This camera is recommended by Skype.

Occasionally you might get the effects of a feed-back loop where the voice coming out of your speakers is picked up by the microphone. The remedy is to turn the volume down a little.

Can you help with this problem?
