i tried to update UBUNTU and something happenned? I am stuck!!! HELP, the thing gets errors all over the place!!

i was downloading , following the instructions for the install t0o the letter then everythig froze. the computer rebooted and now I can not finish installing whaat ever it was I was tiold to install. I now get an error message about 10 times before the boot process is completed and when i try to do what the computer tells me to do I get a mesage bach that I am not a super user and then tells me to send an error report, but How?? Please help me!!

I get this following errors

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

when I do the first line I get this

james@james-desktop:~$ dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege

so0meone sugestet i do this:
james@james-desktop:~$ sudo mount /dev/cdrom

 but I get this:

[sudo] password for james:
mount: can't find /dev/cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

you have to type
sudo dpkg --configure -a
