Sorry, but can you clarify what you want to do?
Are you trying to install ubuntu on an external HD?

I've never done it, but that's what I'd try:
1) check whether your bios allows for booting from yout external HD (plug in the HD before booting, then start your computer, then press del or f1 or whatever brings you into the bios on your computer, and then check the boot order options.)
If that works, then you can try to just do the installation, and tell ubuntu at the right step to install on your external HD (it's called /dev/sdb usually) and then tell it to install the boot loader (grub) on the root sector of the external HD. If not, then tell Ubuntu to install the boot loader on the root sector of the internal hd. If you install grub on the external HD, then you need to select the operating system in the bios each time you boot, if you install it on the internal hd, then make sure grub keeps an option for windoze.

If it were my computer however (supposed it's a PC), I'd put the extra HD as a second internal HD (check the web for instructions - it's easy). Linux should be able to install on the second HD without problems, and you;d be still left with the choice of putting grub on the first HD (which is what I'd do) and switch the OP on startupo in grup, or put it on the second HD and switch in the bios.

not unless you tell it. at some stage the installer will ask you whether to choose/partition your disks automatically or manually. at that step you choose "manual" any partition or disk that you do not (re)format should survive. however, the official advice is to backup _all_ data on _all_ disks that are connected to your system during installation.

as a partition table i suggest 200MB /boot partition, 20gb root ("/") and the rest (i.e. most) as a /home partition - and twice the size of your ram as a swap partition
