Cannot set screen resolution to higher than 640x480

Asked by Tim Lyes

I have on old Fujitsu Siemens AmiloPro V3515 laptop. A few years ago I scrubbed Windows and installed Ubuntu 14 with no problems. When 16.04LTS was released I upgraded and the installation caused problems. The wireless drivers didn't work. I recently noticed that 16.04.02 is available and I thought I'd give it a go.

The boot from a live CD (well bootable USB) is perfect. No problems. Wireless working perfectly. However, once I install to disk and boot from disk I cannot select a screen resolution higher than 640x480. I've done my best to follow the solutions posted on the web and to compare the settings when booting from USB versus booting from disk. However I have not managed to solve the problem myself.

I have pasted the diagnostic commands into a terminal and captured the information copied below. Any help gratefully received,

Tim.

Did you upgrade to 16.10 before upgrading to 17.04?

I have also a laptop with the CN896/VN896/P4M900 [Chrome 9 HC] graphics. You can changed the resolution by modifying the file /etc/default/grub, see https://askubuntu.com/questions/54067/how-do-i-safely-change-grub2-screen-resolution

The problem that remains in my setup is that the screen stays black after resuming. Is it the same on yours?
