Thunar 1.6.11 crashes on Xubuntu 16.04

Asked by Barbara

Hello,

I am having a myriad of problems using Thunar in my Xubuntu 16.04 environment and wondered if I could get some help to identify the issue.

I am very new to Linux desktops, but I am using Linux as my work developer environment and my issues with Thunar is now beginning to have an impact on my work.

Basically, everytime I launch Thunar it hangs - and I have to actively close it either via the TaskManager or occasionally It will close through the interface with a generic message "This window might be busy and is not responding. Do you want to terminate the application?"

I am using Terminal Emulator to do most of my File Manager operations but I would like to solve this issue - is it Thunar or is there something on my system that could be creating the issue?

The Task Manager shows at least 6 sleep operations in progress that all seem to be terminating, with similar PID's, but actually never do - is this normal?

I have updated my system with all available updates through the Software centre over the past few months and Thunar was working well until about a week ago - I think I must have done an update that cause the issue but I don;t know how to identify this.

Hopefully, someone will be able to help....

Thank you.

Beckteck

Hi,

Launched it via terminal. The app started OK - no error messages allowed me one scroll then hung.

Are there any switches that I can add to the launch to add logging info?

Thanks

The logging info will be present in the terminal (if any) when you launch it from the terminal.

Is there any text in the terminal?

No - there was no text on launch.
The only text that subsequently appeared was 'killed' when I managed to
close the application from the Thunar interface.

Hi,

Open in the terminal as you did and use it until you get one of those crashes. It should give you information about what made it crash. Share that with us if you still need help then.

Hi Jordi,

<username>@xubuntu:~$ thunar
Killed

Thank you for your reply - this is the entire results from the terminal
when it crashed...

And this is part of the Task Manager window...

Memory is running at 47% Capacity and 241 Processes....

I'm at a loss as to the cause of the problem.

Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Sorry, I had forgotten of this one until I received the Janitor's update. Are you still having this problem? If this is the case please do this:

1 - Use Thunar right until it crashes again
2 - On the terminal write:

sudo cat /var/log/syslog > ~/syslog.txt

3 - This will create a text file in your home folder, open it with any text editor and paste the contents here:

https://paste.ubuntu.com/

4 - Share the generated link here.

This log might help us point what's happening.

Cheers,

J

Hi Jordi,

Thanks for the update I'll keep an eye on the bug and see if I can
replicate some of the behaviour seen.

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Barbara
