Can't boot after adding 2 packages

Asked by Sam Jackson

I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 to my laptop alongside windows. I downloaded the GNOME 16.04 package as a desktop option, and I selected GDM rather than DM Light. I have yet to see either one, as when I restarted to log in, the OS froze on a purple screen. I've tried restarting in recovery mode but it hasn't mattered. I don't want to have to reinstall Ubuntu, although I have a boot DVD if necessary.

The last thing I installed was the TLP package for battery life and overheating. I don't know whether it installed properly or what is causing the boot to freeze, although I've read where GNOME can cause it, but when I tried figuring out the process to use GRUB to switch to DMlight, it hasn't worked.

Can someone help get me to where I can at least boot up and remove the packages? I'd rather not have to reinstall and set up the Windows/Linux partition again.

Drop to root recovery mode and run:

mount -o remount,rw /

(note the space between rw and the slash)

You can then manipulate the packages as you wish
