Please consult the README NVIDIA

Under System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers, does it say that restricted/proprietary drivers are enabled?

I have this problem every time theres a new kernel build.
what you need to do is deactivate the nivdia driver via the System>Administration>hardware profiles menu. restart.
(assuming youve downloaded the latest version of the nvidia driver)
hit Ctrl+alt+f1
login with your user credentials.
$sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
$chmod +x (insert the driver name, for example, mine is NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.29-pkg2)
$./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.29-pkg2 (or whatever the driver name is)
follow the prompts. this will build the kernel modules for the new kernel. more than likely it will fail to fetch a pre-compiled kernel module, this is ok
$sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
it should boot fine, with the current driver enabled.
if not, make sure its re-selected in your system>admin>hardware profiles menu

good luck
i hope this helps you.

The best way to enable the nvidia driver now is to enable it via System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. Select the driver and press "Activate".
