Wireless Card doesn't work

Asked by chuckmagic

Ok so I'm a total idiot when it comes to this. But, my pc is dual booting with vista and ubuntu 8.10. I can not connect to my wireless network and it appears that the wireless card isn't working with ubuntu at all. I think it may be a driver problem but for some extra information: the pc is a hp m9350f. I think the card is by Lite-on.

--The wireless light blinks in the front all the time when it is working in vista...but only in ubuntu does it stay lit all the time.

How do I get ubuntu to work with the wireless card?

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.

Then please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here

Regards,

Mark

It's also helpful to plug in the wired connection like Mark suggests and then seeing if there are any restricted Hardware Drivers available for your wifi card.

Administration -> Hardware Drivers

That's all it takes on a couple of laptops I've tried, other ones like the one on my friend's Dell Inspiron need a bit more fiddling first.

Kind regards,
Jon

Is there another way without connecting without a LAN cable?
I don't have one long enough.

I'm kinda new at it too, . have about a week ahead of you. You need to connect w/ ethernet cable so you can download drivers for your wireless device ... or that is what I had to do.

Can you help with this problem?
