Wireless network support getting worse with each new version of Ubuntu

Asked by Jeff Rash

I've been using Ubuntu now for several years. I started with version 6.06. I'm currently running 8.10. I've noticed that the wireless network support has been getting weaker with each new version. I used to be able to connect to my office wireless without issue with 6.06 and 6.10. When I upgrade to 7.04 connecting became unstable. Sense 7.10 I have not been able to connect at all. I have reported to issue on launchpad. No one is working it and it seems that no one other than the people affected cares about the problem.

WPA2 Enterprise with PEAP and GTC. Why can't we get this working?

Network Manager Version: 0.7-0ubuntu1~nm1~intrepid1
WPA Supplicant Version: 0.6.4-2

Sorry Randell, I've gone back to using Windows.

Sorry to hear that Jeff. For what it's worth, Jaunty (9.04) ended the wireless issues I had experienced in earlier releases. Karmic (9.10) is also functional even though it's still in beta. I think it's safe to say that wireless support is getting *much* better.

One thing that needs work though: network-manager, which is a RedHat project in need of some care. Unfortunately this is mostly out of the hands of Ubuntu, but there is hope as the Ubuntu crowd feeds additional bug reports upstream, and hopefully as more people pitch-in to improve the code.

Cheers,
Randall.
