I have very slow download speeds

since I switched from vista to Ubuntu 8.10 my download speed dropped rapidly. I'm using a dsl modem, before the switch it was an average 300-500 kbs now it barely reaches 40 kb. can someone give a link on where to increase the download rate.

Also, I'm downloading world of warcraft it needs 3 gb. it downloads 30 kb

attach the result of command ifconfig. Most probably there is a problem with MTU size. Attach also a model of modem and the result of command lsusb.
