ubuntu desktop on dual xeon?

Asked by DanAdams

Hi

I have an old-ish HP/Compaq Workstation (model number W6000), which has two single-core 32-bit Xeon processors at 2.0ghz. I am wanting to install Ubuntu Desktop on this machine rather than my main machine until I am comfortable using it as my main operating system.

Does Ubuntu Desktop edition support dual processors or do I need to be looking at the server edition or a different linux distribution?

If Ubuntu Desktop does support dual processors, will it make use of dual processors for every application, natively to the OS or what?

Many thanks

Dan

Linux supports multiprocessor systems since 1996 (V. 2.0). Ubuntu (and every other linux-based distribution) will handle your dual processory natively to the os.

Thanks, I am not very familiar with linux at all - I used it whilst at university on the university systems but not at home - and I couldn't seem to find this answer anywhere. I was extrapolating from my windows experience that only the more high-end editions of the OS would support multiple processors and therefore that the "desktop" edition of ubuntu might not. I'll go ahead with Ubuntu then, thanks for the quick reply :-)

Welcome, then, to the growing ubuntu community. You made the right choice to test Ubuntu :-)

You might find this usefull: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty. It's kind of a unofficial FAQ for the Ubuntu Feisty distribution.
