Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't start after the orange loading bar

Asked by realmadrid505

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 with the boot loader installed in the first partition. All was OK, but when I ejected the CD and reboot my computer in order to start the Operating System, the Ubuntu kernel starts, and then the orange loading bar fills. When the orange loading bar finishs, the screen goes black and nothing happens.

I need help please.

During boot up do you get a menu with a few different Ubuntu options with one of them "Recovery Mode"? If so it might be worth going in there and try "Repair broken packages" and "Clear some space" and more crucially the other one about graphics. It's quite a useful general fix-it tool and allows you to continue the normal boot-up when you've done.

Good luck and hope this helps, regards from
Tom :)

I tried that, but I go to Repair broken packages, it requested me to download something, but all the downloads failed.
And clear some space i think that it didnt do anything to fix it.
The other one about graphics, i cant see it in the menu.

I think that my problem is about the resolution, because the monitor's lights start to flash a lot.
how can I change it ? in that menu, before entering ubuntu 8.10 ?

It could be a resolution problem, try to boot ubuntu in recovery mode.

Login at the shell then run:
   sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
to backup your xorg config file, then run:
   sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and follow the on screen configuration.

After that, start X with "sudo init 5" or by rebooting (sudo reboot).

Good luck, if there are problems again write here :)

Can you help with this problem?
