Regarding downloading

I am using TATA INDICOM USB modem, Speed is upto 240kbps, for windows to improve the download speed they provided download accelerator and for linux no download accelerator software has been provided, and my download speed is too low, How can i improve my downloading speed? For example to my update my system it took almost 5.30 hrs to complete it,. Please suggest me a solution...
       Also i am unable to download vidoes from net, Should i have to install additional softwares to download videos from net?

How are you trying to download videos? Ubuntu has Transmission (a bit torrent client) as part of the base install. If you're downloading torrents then at the "open with" dialogue, choose Transmission.
