Kubuntu on Dell Mini 12? OpenSuSE?

Asked by Jim Jensen

Am seriously contemplating buying a Dell Mini 12 with Ubuntu 8.0.4.1. However, I require KDE, hence Kubuntu apparently. Will it be possible for me to install Kubuntu on the Mini 12 after I receive it? If my Ubuntu installation gets clobbered, how do I restore it? Is some kind of distribution media included? Will the Mini 12 boot from a USB external DVD drive? USB memory stick? Have never used any flavor of Ubuntu before; am currently OpenSuSE 11.0 user, and would like the option of loading it. Is this likely to be possible? [I know some of these questions might be better submitted to Dell, but would appreciate any info you folks might be able to provide]. Thanks very much!

The Dell Mini (and in fact all netbooks I'm aware of) will boot from external CD/DVD or from USB. I've successfully installed Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mandriva on a selection of netbooks.

Andy

Why not set up a dual-boot or multi-boot? Note that Ubuntu needs about 8Gb fre at minimum but Kubuntu will probably need a bit more. 15Gb should give it enough 'elbow room'. This link is for people with little or no experience with linux so i'm sure you can work it out from this, if you haven't already ;)

I don't think you need to worry about dual booting. Ubuntu and Kubuntu are nearly identical except for the desktop and default apps. I'm not 100% sure about the Dell version of Ubuntu but with any standard Ubuntu install you can add in all the KDE features and choose between a KDE or GNOME session at login time. It's the same OS so not a dual boot but you have both options. With the Dell version that may or may not be the case but I suspect it is as it uses the same repositories with an extra one for the Dell add ons.

To do this, you can open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

and all the needed packages will be added. Next time you boot you can choose a KDE session (at the login screen) and even set it to default. The downside to this is you end up with a lot of apps as you have both KDE and Gnome tools that do roughly the same thing (like rhythmbox and amarok for example).

If you really just want Kubuntu you could install that over the Dell version. You may to manually set up a few things but since we know Ubuntu works on them it shouldn't be too much to make Kubuntu work.

Thanks very much for the response. I won't know for a while (until I
get my Dell Mini 12) whether this works. I'll respond more completely
after I try your solution.

Thanks very much again!

I think Jim Hutchinson has the best answer. Dual-boot might be away of testing out Kubuntu on your machine first but you could probably do that by booting off a LiveCd of Kubuntu more easily. Dell have perfected the install on the machine and made sure that all the tweaks are set up right for you. Also it's worth keeping their warranty and their help-desk support - which makes Jim's answer easily the best by a long way, in my opinion.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
