It seems that the HPLIP software is not correctly installed (see the messages about the dependency problems), but the HPLIP installer is not able to install the missing packages.
What output do you get for the commands
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo dpkg --audit
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get install python-dev

Thank you for your responses.
With regard to the suggestion by Actionparsnip to print from the terminal using sudo gedit, the command opens gedit but the menu at the top (File, etc.) does not appear and I cannot give it the order to print. If I enter gedit from the desktop (not the Terminal) the menu atop does appear, but the same print error appears on the command to print. The Following are the error messages when entering gedit via the terminal and sudo:

Manfred--Following your indications solved the problem. Having followed the steps you outlined, I returned to the orginal HP installation instructions and this time it did install the missing dependency packages, uninstall the earlier verion and install the updated version and the HP proprietary plugin, and now I am able to use the printer. Thank you very much to you and to Actionparsnip for your help

"... y 116 no actualizados ..."
There are updates available for your system. You should consider installing them (e.g. by using update-manager or by issuing the command "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade")
And you should consider doing a cleanup action to remove obsolete kernel packages (e.g. with the command "sudo apt-get --purge autoremove")
