Ubuntu 1604 recognizes HP LaserJet Pro M127fn Multifunction Printer but doesn't print

Asked by Pablo

Ubuntu 1604 recognizes HP LaserJet Pro M127fn Multifunction Printer, installs the driver that is provided by Ubuntu, but it doesn't print. So I went to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html and I followed the instructions for the installer. As part of this process it identifies missing dependencies, but when it proceeds to install them, it gives error on attempting to install the various lib*** dependencies, among others. So I am stuck. Can you help me?.
Thank you

What is the full output of when you run the installer?

(remember to not use sudo or root. You will be asked for your password in the install)

If you run the application you want to print from using sudo, does it print OK?

Thanks for your reply.
I've never printed using sudo. Would you please give me the commands to do so, and I will try it.

It seems that the HPLIP software is not correctly installed (see the messages about the dependency problems), but the HPLIP installer is not able to install the missing packages.

What output do you get for the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo dpkg --audit
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get install python-dev

Thank you for your responses.

With regard to the suggestion by Actionparsnip to print from the terminal using sudo gedit, the command opens gedit but the menu at the top (File, etc.) does not appear and I cannot give it the order to print. If I enter gedit from the desktop (not the Terminal) the menu atop does appear, but the same print error appears on the command to print. The Following are the error messages when entering gedit via the terminal and sudo:
(gedit:16203): Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

Manfred--Following your indications solved the problem. Having followed the steps you outlined, I returned to the orginal HP installation instructions and this time it did install the missing dependency packages, uninstall the earlier verion and install the updated version and the HP proprietary plugin, and now I am able to use the printer. Thank you very much to you and to Actionparsnip for your help

There are updates available for your system. You should consider installing them (e.g. by using update-manager or by issuing the command "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade")

And you should consider doing a cleanup action to remove obsolete kernel packages (e.g. with the command "sudo apt-get --purge autoremove")

Thank you. I have proceeded to do as you have recommended--the updates and cleanup.
