Can't increase screen resolution, it's 800x600.

Asked by V.E. Tabery

Binary package hint: pidgin

I need to login as root, but I don't know the root password, nor can I cancel the root password. In Fedora, f.i., you can set the root password. What can I do?

Your title isn't consistent with the content of your bug report, but this seems like a support request anyway, so I'm closing this and converting it to a question in the answer tracker.

In Ubuntu you don't generally use root account, you should use "sudo" instead. If you really want to use root account, you might type "sudo su" and provide your password.

Thanks for the idea with "sudo su".

I'm sorry for asking several things in one question. I have the following problems:
1- I got a nvidia graphics card (GeForce2 MX/MX400) and a widescreen monitor (Hanns-G Hi221D).
When I don't use the special nvidia driver I get 800x600 pixels on the screen without being able to encrease the resolution.
Using the special nvidia driver limits the resolution to 640x480! My monitor has 1680x1050 dots! So I loaded several programs that have to do with changing resolution, but I need "Administrator Mode"! From there my question which is not solved by Your answer cause there is no root user as in Fedora!
One program tells me there are no DDC/CI monitors!

2- Is there a possibility in 8.04 to automatically login as a normal user? There exists this possibility in 8.10.

In the last days I tried several Linux-systems and I like Your Ubuntu version 8.04 best, but I whould prefer having a root and users and automatic login. I whould like to have the possibility to choose Gnome and stick to it or to choose KDE and evenly stick to it. It whould be purer.

Thanks for listening and thanks for Your help anyway.

1. To run any program as root just type sudo program_name
2. Yes, go to System->Administration->Login screen, then Security tab. You will see autologin functions there

I have a similar problem. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I have an Nvidia 9800GTX and I can only attain a 1360x768 resolution on my 1920x1080 monitor. Keep in mind, I'm an absolute newbie and I just put Ubuntu on this machine today to try to break the shackles of Microsoft.

Can you help with this problem?
