I don't think that 512MB RAM is enough. my laptop with around 700MBs did not work with Ubuntu 8.10. Try using Xubuntu 8.10 or a lower version of Ubuntu.

The recommended RAM for Ubuntu 8.10 is 384MB. The recommended for Xubuntu 8.10 is 256MB, so you should be fine with Xubuntu.

Press CTRL+ALT+F2 and try to update your system you need to be connected to the net...

Make login with your user and password and type:

sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then type:

sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

Then type

sudo reboot

to restart your pc.

Hope this helps
