connecting a printer via usb-parallel cable

Asked by arenberg

Hi,

I am new to linux (Ubuntu Feisty Fawn) and tried to install an old laser jet 4 via a usb->parallel cable (Dynex DX-UBPC)

It does not work on linux:
1)- the cable seems detected and is reported in the hardware database
2)- the printer seems also detected and reported.

3)when asking t print the test page, pages just go through the printer
Based on 1) and 2) I suppose it is possible to make the printer print correctly

I am right ? and how can this be fixed

Thanks

Arenberg

Thanks for the question.

Did you configure the printer with the correct printer device file? You didn't say what printer you try to use, so I can't tell you which one is the right one.

I hope this helps.

Hi Ralph

Sorry for the lack of info
Here are the steps I followed:
0) printer ON
1) connection cable (usb to parallel)+ printer
2) use the administration tool for printer=>it detected the printer (laserjet 4m)
3) I tried the test page=> sheets just go through
4) uninstall the printer
5) retry configure the printer => printer not detected anymore
6) check in the tool 'hardware information=> its detects the presence of the cable (interface 1284) and gives the name of the printer (HP Laserjet 4)+ details (I cannt copy them in txt format)
7) I remove the cable afrom the usb port and the hardware information tool removes the reference to 1284 interface and the printer
7bis) I put back the cable - reference to the printer and interafec 1284 through usb detected again
8) I reasonably conclude that the printer is detected in the 'hardward information' tool (menu system /preference) but not by the configuration tool

I hope thes test can help diagnosing the problem

Thanks for the help

Since it is an HP printer, I would definitely try the hplib toolbox
