8.04 is the latest release with Long Term Support
Although 8.10 has better support for more hardware and has more functionality and interesting 'cool' things it might be worth sticking with 8.04. 9.04 is due to be properly released in April (hence the 04 bit) which isn't far away and all the 8.10 users (but not the 8.04 ones) are going to need to upgrade to 9.04 then. Join us then? 10.04 is due to be the next release with LTS so if you do upgrade to 8.10 then you'll be able to help other people when we all need to upgrade as you'll find it easy then.

Either way good luck and have fun. Oh btw a 6.06 user appeared for the first time last week, he/she never had any problems until a small issue last week so don't worry and don't feel pressured into upgrading - that's the Windows users world, not ours ;)

Many regards from
Tom :)

If you are on 8.04 and hav internet access then i think you can upgrade without using the 8.10 Cd and it would be a lot easier and you'd be able to keep all your extra programs and settings and data much more easily i think it's either an option in Synaptic or in Update Manager

System - Administration

somewhere near the end of the list there ;)

To know about all the software included in free 8.10 desktop edition, check and read the following links:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/allpackages
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid-updates/allpackages
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid-backports/allpackages

OpenOffice is always included in Ubuntu. You can install it by Synaptic.

OpenOffice 2.4 or maybe 3.0 is in the free cd. I'm not sure that 3.0 is considered stable enough yet but if it isn't then it's easy enough to install although 2.4 is great and i can't yet see any advantage in the upgrade.

This link to an FAQ might answer about 3d desktop and more

Good luck and regards from
