I uninstalled Ubuntu 8.10, but bootmenu still has Ubuntu option...

Asked by Shinji C. Schweitz

I just got a new laptop some days ago. It came with Vista.
I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so I installed it with dualboot system.

Tried some things, and I decided I didn't want it anymore, so using the same boot CD I burnt, I uninstalled Ubuntu.
Problem is everytime I boot my laptop, that same bootmenu comes up asking which OS I want to use.

I really need help getting rid of this. I tried some on my own.
I thought I haven't uninstalled it fully, so I tried to uninstall again, but I ended up installing and uninstalling Ubuntu again.

I ended up with bootmenu that says

-Windows
-Ubuntu
-Ubuntu

This is really annoying...

Please help me get rid of them from the bootmenu.

Do you have a Vista CD, if so boot it and see if it provides a repair option. if it does, select that , (XP by the way does).
repair will want to know what to boot, select 1
then help for a list of actions

In the repair options find something similar to "fixmbr"
that will rebuild the Vista boot record and do away with linux.

Nope sorry ealthuis. This is a Wubi Wobbly problem.
The Wubi depends on both Windows and Ubuntu working well and thus combines the worst of both Operating Systems. Usually when Windows gets infected or suffers one of it's typical instability issues then Ubuntu gets the blame. The Wubi is a bit like trying to build a house on shifting sands. A proper dual boot system combines the best of both operating systems but takes a little more work like this

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

and is much easier to remove if your dissatisfied with it. Many people are dissatisfied with the Wubi but when they try this proper dua-boot they become firm fans of Ubuntu.

With the Wubi install i could have helped with Xp but Vista is a bit too stroppy so i just hope there's something in this guide to help
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Uninstallation

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks to ealthuis and Tom,

Since I don't have the Vista CDs, I followed Tom's suggestion.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Uninstallation
Under: How do I manually uninstall Wubi?
I am still trying things out here, but I already have some positive results.

I was able to modify bootmenu by going to control_panel > system > advanced > startup_and_recovery and set the bootmenu showtime to 0 second. After restarting the laptop, I did see that annoying menu for about 0.5 seconds, but it automatically selected Vista and moved onto log on screen. Not perfect, but I am satisfied with the result.

I don't want to use the "system restore" option to wipe my laptop to get clean start, because I installed a newly bought Norton 360 after buying the laptop, and I'm afraid system restore will get rid of it, and my knowledge about Norton is once I do restore, then I have to pay another subscription...

Well, thanks again ealthuis and Tom.

Brilliant, nicely done and thanks for posting the answer so far back into here. :)

I tried the Wubi in Xp and after uninstalling had the same menu trouble but found that choosing Ubuntu still got me into Xp! I did eventually manage to modify a "Config.sys" file and get rid of the menu but i gather that Vista has completely removed the "config.sys" so i haven't a clue - or at least didn't until you posted the answer. Thanks for that :)

Yes before trying the system restore i would definitely recommend hassling Norton/Symnatec into giving you the install discs. Sorry i didn't realise that was a suggestion on the page i gave you. Personally i am sooo glad to be free of all that marketing strategy and paranoia. Although i can always boot into Xp whenever i want ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
