How do laptop webcam initiate ?

I have HP new laptop with ubuntu 8.10 and want to communicate with my friends by webcam. how can I do this ?

pidgin comes with ubuntu by default for instant messaging and it supports many different IM protocols like MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc, but it doesnt support video chatting. for that i recommend aMSN.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install amsn

I want do this trough Ekiga? which support video chatting, but i don't know how to make it work.

You can use Skype for communication. My laptop webcam works fine with Skype.
If you are looking for a stand-alone webcam app to take pictures and stuff then try Cheese. VLC Media Player can also record video using your webcam.
