vista only laptop

Asked by rob

i recently purchased a toshiba laptop 3 months ago. unfortunately i came loaded with vista home basic loaded on it. after much effort i was able to erase vista and load windows xp. i was unable to get any sound out of it. i found the site that had the xp drivers for the onboard soundcard but loading them did not help. toshiba support informed me that the laptop was made to run only vista. now i am planning to format the hardeive and install the newest version of ubuntu and am wonderin if i am going to run into driver problems. the answer is to load it i guess and see what happens but i am looking for some feedback on the laptop being vista only. ubuntu is a whole different flavor than trying to load xp. any suggestions before i start this would be appreciated. microsoft and toshiba have driven me away and ubuntu is the way i want to go. the laptop is a celeron m. has an onboard realtec soundcard. i gig memory. nothing special just something for my wife to do e-mail and play on the net.

You can use the Live CD for testing issues. If the hardware works in the Live CD (without installing), then it's very likely it also works when it is installed. You can also check on online databases like https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptops or http://www.linux-laptop.net/ if your laptop is listed.

If you want to have operating system with internet and e-mail, I commend you to download GeeXboX from http://www.geexbox.org/en/downloads.html. I have been testing this Linux and I enjoined it. Ths kind of OS is live CD and you can run it on your Laptop beside windows vista. Of course if you still have got this.

i just got through downloading and burning a cd with geexbox. i am running it directly from my laptop cd and it seems very smooth. a very nice looking program.
this past weekend i was able to do the same with ubuntu 7.04 and it also ran beautifully.
i seems my "vista only" laptop has no problems running on linux. it is now only a matter of running both geexbox and ubuntu for a while to see which i prefer. then i will format the drive and get rid of the vista os which i never wanted but was being forced to use.
it is a nice feeling to know that i have a choice in what i want to run.
thank-you everyone for your help.
