firefox keeps blinking on and off.

Asked by ngodfather114

I have the latest ubuntu, ibex. Everything was fine until 2 weeks ago when I noticed my screen was blinking. Only when online. My screen now blinks alot and it's annoying. Plus the top bar where the buttons to close or minimize are is not there. It's gone and I don't know why. One day all is well the next things are haywired. Please help!?

First to get the Windows List back right click on the taskbar and choose "Add to Panel" scroll right down to near the end of the list and select "Window List" that should give you back the buttons to close and minimise any open windows.

Now go to the Applications men and click on Accessories and select Terminal from the sub-menu. Into the terminal/command window/console type

gstreamer-properties

Click on the "Video" tab and change the top item "Output" from "Auto" to "...(no Xv)". Hopefully that should stop the flickering when you're online and when you're watching movies.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hey tom thanks but it didn't work. I still have the problems. Let me better explain this. I have a windows list and task bar. But when I go online the online screen grows to big and covers my task bar so I can't get to it. I have to hit F11 to get the screen to change back. The all is well. But if I don't then I get alot of flickering plus my screen is to big. So big that there is no "x" to close out and I can't get my task bar. Now the funny thing is if I log on to my computer under a different user all is well and no problems. But under my user name I never downloaded or played with any settings so how is it out of wack. I hope I'm making sense, and someone can help me. Thanks again.

I think i can help with the windows size problem but i'm not sure how to deal with the flickering, if the previous post about gstreamer-properties didn't work. Sorry about that.

When your browser is small enough to show the title bar and you can see the "x" to close the window then try dragging the window down by the title-bar and make the whole browser window a lot smaller. Java or java-script (i'm not sure what the differences are between them) can resize your browser window unless you specifically set up your settings to prevent it being allowed to mess things up. Go up to the Edit menu and click on Preferences at the bottom of that menu. Then in the dialogue box click on the "Content" tab/button click on the "Advanced" button beside Java-script and UNtick "Move or resize existing window".

Hopefully that should sort out the one problem for you. Please re-post the other question and hope that someone else picks it up from the front-desk ;)

Thanks tom I solved it. I had a few other problems going on and couldn't take it anymore so I just re-installed my ubuntu and started from scratch. Thanks for your help.
