Missing Programs

Asked by racolavito

When I install programs from the Synaptic Package Manager it says they are installed but I can not find them anywhere. Since I have only had Linux for less than a week I know it is something that I am doing wrong but I just can not understand What. I read somewhere to do a apt find thing but even that did not find them. When I go back to the package manager it says they are all ready installed. HELP Please.

What packages are you talking about? If you tell us we'll help clarify.

Remember that not all packages are GUI packages. Some programs install commands that are to be used from a terminal, so won't show up with shortcuts/icons in your menu's. Other programs, even though they're GUI, does nevertheless not install a shortcut by default and you're expected to either do this yourself or runt the program again using alt-f2 or a terminal.

Some of the Amateur Radio programs I have tried to install are Jlog,XLog, TWLog, TWClock, Node, hamradiomenus, just to name a few. The Synaptic Program Manager says they were installed, but I can not find them anywhere.

At least what you can do is:

Hit Alt+F2,
Enter for example 'twclock' (without the single quotes), or try 'twlog'.
Hit Return.

See if the application appears, if not, the installation of those programs might have failed.

Can you help with this problem?
