Elisa 0.5.27 black screen and graphics all messed up.

Hello...

I have just installed Elisa 0.5.27. When I start the application, my screen briefly flashes the icons and then they disappear. The text has horizontal lines across them and the selection buttons are wavy squares instead of perfectly shaped. I don't know if any of the functionality of the program works since I can't see anything on the screen to test. I would really like to try this application as my Media Center with my PS3. I can't seem to find any documentation on minimal hardware, installation instructions or a user's manual.
