help in upgrading ubuntu 5.10 to ubuntu 8.10

I have ubuntu 8.10 installation CD, which i tried installing in the earlier version of ubuntu i.e 5.10, which not possible. could anyone guide me in install the latest version?

make a clean installation, not upgrade, Ubuntu 5 is too old for this method.
