is it possible to install Xubuntu without GUI?

Asked by kovalenkov

The title says it all really. on Pentium 200MMX with 128MB of RAM xubuntu runs slower than Windows 98 with all possible junk installed. And that after I uninstalled all not needed applications. Thus, I am wondering if Xubuntu can be installed without graphical user interface.

Xubuntu without gui won't be Xubuntu :-)
You can always try the server edition.

Am downloading it at the moment. It will most likely solve this issue.

By the way, you can always try to uninstall the desktop with sudo apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop.

@Cesare Tirabassi
Uninstalling the meta package "ubuntu-desktop", "xubuntu-desktop" does nothing. Meta packages contain only references to other packages, but not data at all. So uninstalling them does nothing.

@kovalenkov
I think you won't be happy with a xfce desktop. Try window managers like openbox, xvfm, etc. Those window manager are slimmer than xfce and therefore better suited for legacy computers.
