You can enter passwords for lets say FTP, SFTP sites, and when you work with them via different programs (for example gedit, screem, eog), you wont need to reenter passwords, just 1 password for unlocking your keyring.

The concept of keyring is mostly linked to key pair systems such as PGP/GnuPG keys. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GnuPrivacyGuardHowto about the use of GnuPG on Ubuntu. A keyring is a collection of references to keys that allows to deal safely with ACLs for example.

A keyring basically stores all your various passwords so that you can use it with just one. I think the email from Vytas gave an excellent example. Mostly, you'll see the keyring as gnome-keyring or kde-keyring, depending on which interface you use.

I have not found much use for this key ring yet. If I understand the concept, it is something like a master password but different !!!!!!

A keyring protects and encrypts your stored passwords for several apps. It alerts you whenever an app tries to use a password associated with an account id you have previously entered.

Can you help with this problem?
