how to install software

Asked by Steve Walker

Hello
I am very new to Linux and Ubuntu. I want to install these two programs but can not figure out how.
I can download them and extract them from the archive to the Desktop.
But when I try to open or double left click what the properties tab says is the executable file nothing happens.
I even changed the permissions in the properties tab to read and write for User, Group and Other.
BitWise.tar.gz from http://www.bitwiseim.com/download.php and http://www.no-ip.com/client/linux/noip-duc-linux.tar.gz
Thank you very much for any help.
Steve

As for how you install bitwise in a linux that it works for, just untar the file and stick it in the location you want, navigate to said location, and type ./BitWise

also i read on their forum: bitwise is broken in 7.10 ubuntu, and 10.3 suse. 7.04 ubuntu it works, and 10.2 suse. the developers don't feel the need to fix it as not enough people use bitwise on linux, and its not open source, so nobody else can fix it. the only thing you can do is use an older version of linux and hope it gets fixed, or switch to a different IM.

Can you help with this problem?
