Ubuntu?

Asked by stab

I have not been able to get Ubuntu to install on my PC. I tried two diffrent disks and even had a free one sent. As frustrated as I am I don't want to give up just yet.
I have a PC Chips Motherboard and an AMD processor.
1. Does it matter which install I use?
2. Is the AMD64 iso for 64 Bit computers?

Yes amd64 is generally for 64 bit computers (like the Core 2 Duo from Intel). If you have an amd with 64bit it should also work.

By install, do you mean the version number? The newest one is 8.10. I don't know enough about your hardware but you could also try to google your hardware + ubuntu and check if there are any particular problems with it.

What does it say when you try to boot the live CD?

You know that you have to "boot from the CD", ie. put it in your CD drive and restart the computer.

Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the help.

I may have been unclear...
1. I put the CD in and Ubuntu starts up, I partition the drive and Install \ 8.10 version.
2. After it installs it auto ejects the CD and says remove the cd and hit enter.
3. After I hit enter it boots up throught the Grub loader and to the Ubuntu Screen.

This is where I am having the issue. I tried two diffrent Hard Drives and still the same thing happens.
I can load Fedora Linux with no problems?

I am thinking I may need to just reinstall XP and call it a day.

So what's your processor and what did you try to do?
Where in the install process do you get stuck?

As Bernhard said, amd64 is for any kind of 64 bit processors. If you have an older 32 bit processor, then use the standard i386 version (which does also work on 64 bit processors, but you loose out on the extra performance). Whether the manufacturer is AMD or Intel doesn't matter.

It's always best to choose the newest version (8.10), since that's usually most compatible with most new hardware.

Normally you should be able to just put in the CD and restart your computer - and then the Ubuntu CD should boot, and you click through some self-explanatory questions. If that doesn't happen (very rare), you should tell your computer in the bios to boot from CD (immediately after re-start press "esc" or "f10" or whatever the first screen that flashes up tells you, and then search around until you find an option "boot device" or "boot order" - there you choose to boot from CD first - it usually tells you the manufacturer code of your drives as options).

jetbundle < Answered my question..." Whether the manufacturer is AMD or Intel doesn't matter." Thank you for that.

I will document the error I get when booting up and post it later.

Thanks guys
