Ubuntu 8.10 install hangs

Asked by mebrittan

While install 8.10 it goes smoothly through the first part (all 7 steps) but when it gets to the Partitions Formatting it hangs at “Creating ext3 file system for / in partition #1 SCSI1 (0.0.0)…”

I’ve tried everything I can think of but it always ends the same way so now I need some serious HELP!

Thanks.

The system is a three year old AMD Athlon in a Gigabyte motherboard, 2GB of memory and a clean 120GB ide hard drive.

120GB may require 4/5 minutes to format, how much time did you wait ?

Are you using SATA hard drives ? if yes, I suggest that you go in BIOS option and find an option called like 'SATA mode' and enable Legacy Mode support , for some reason, it helped me a few times with old SATA systems.

Thanks for the response! No the hard drive is a plain old ATA, not serial. As for the time I gave it, about 7 hours before it crashed to a B/W text screen with the same three messages over and over each preceded by a string of numbers in brackets something like
[12345678.912345678] and which seem to increment. In frustration I shut the system off and do not remember the messages. This was running 8.04 a week ago no problem, then I blow it away to try Windows 7 bata which installed and ran ok in a MS fashion but when I tried to go back to Ubuntu I ran into this problem. XP will install and run, Linspire 5.0 will install and run. I have tried deleting old partitions using and even doing a low level reformat...

Sorry for the long reply but I'm at wits end.

Thanks Christophe, I did and it should work. The funny thing is I can't reinstall 8.04 either. Oh well.

I'm not sure that HDD is good.
please download system rescue cd from http://www.sysresccd.org/Download (245 MiB)
check md5sum (linux-md5sum or win-fsum), write the iso...

- you can run this live OS (in default not touch your system, but you can with some tools)
you can use cfdisk to partitioning that HDD and format with mkfs (mkfs.ext3)
or you can use gparted

- you can use ranish (boot option) to partitioning the dirve to FAT32 and format for TESTING

Can you help with this problem?
