Is there a security issue in making /var/log usable by all?

Asked by Jon Charge

I note that the /var/log directly is set for root only. If I make the permissions for me only, will I break something? Also, if I open it up (I'm the only user of the system) are there any other security issues?

For those users that need to read files in /var/log, add them to group adm. If you change owner or group owner for the files, my guess is it will break. Security issue is there, because programs may log password or other confidential data, that is why not everyone should be able to read them.
