How do i fix partitioning probem?

Asked by deadhead90

Hi,
I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 onto my desktop along side win XP with partitions set up for 30% windows and 70% ubuntu using the slider. The installation process was fine until it hit 36% where an error message came up saying that an error had occurred and installation could not continue so i quit the install. Now when i try to install again at the partition creator when i am asked to select the partition size it doesn't show windows it only shows two ubuntu partitions, and even i make one partition 99% of the available space (121.1GB) it says that there isn't enough space. I tried to fix it manually but i was at a loss for what to do. If some one could help me i would be very great full, because i am new to linux

First Try using the Boot option " Check CD for defects ".

Are you sure your HD has Good Health ?

Do you have a legal Windows XP disk, one that came with your computer.
If so boot it in the CD drive
When it asks what to do , either repair or install, choose repair i.e. enter r
next enter 1
then enter help
A long list of actions is available, choose one that reads something like "diskpart"
Enter "help diskpart",
that will show what partitions exist and an opportunity to delete partitions.

Delete partitions you do not need or want.
Then enter "fixmbr" to restore Windows boot record

Then shut down the cd and remove it, then boot Windows,
run the disk defrag program before attempting to install Linux from a CD

One caveat, the actual items in the repair list may not be exactly like I indicated here, but close, any time when in doubt enter help ....
