Asked by Jamie Dell

Help This is my first time using any linux system and i am having problems. When the xubuntu version launchs after the boot choice it comes up with a comnad prompt login script saying dell02(my computer name) login: I dont know what this means as i did not set up a user!! and then when i type anything and hit enter it says password but i cant use numbers which is what the password i entered is made from.

What do i do is there something i am missing??

At the moment of installation you should have created at least one user. And while you're typing the password, it doesn't print _anything_ to the screen. It's still typed and when you press Enter you should be able to login. If not, you need to use Recovery Mode (the 2nd first choice in the GRUB boot loader menu) and add a user by typing "adduser username" to the command line.

What comes to your real problem, it seems that
a) you've some kind of problem with X (Graphical user interface) or
b) it's not installed at all.
You should try to install package xubuntu-desktop (sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop) and if it says it's already installed then try to reconfigure X with sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg . Selecting video card driver to VESA would be safest bet for now.

Can anyone tell me how to pull up the desk top on Ubuntu????
It is an old version but it looks like this when I try to log in.
mike@administrator::~$
What do I type in the line? That is what it looks like on my computer and I can’t pull up the desktop if there is one.
