Working perfectly for me,
have you installed from " ubuntu-restricted-extras " package ???
if not, uninstall, and install " ubuntu-restricted-extras " package, and dont forget the Updates.

juancarlospaco@ibex:~$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_10"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode, sharing)
juancarlospaco@ibex:~$ uname -a ; lsb_release --all
Linux ibex 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
Codename: intrepid

So i have Ubuntu Intrepid and Java 1.6 and works on Firefox, with sound.

good luck friend...

It's a package to use 'Restricted Formats'.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#Playing%20Restricted%20Formats

GStreamer packages are useful (bad+ugly set). ##no probs watching the clip flawless with Totem on Hardy.

((what is the ubuntu-restricted-extras?))
A package containing a ready to run Sun Java 1.6

((and how do I install that?))
On Firefox address bar, type and press ENTER

apt:/ubuntu-restricted-extras

((also are you reffering to uninstalling java?))
uninstall Java, remove Java, erase Java, then reinstall using the ubuntu-restricted-extras package.

I'm sorry, I can't comment on ubuntu-restricted-extras because I don't have it installed, but as I've said I'm able to view and here trailer with Totem. I don't really understand though why you didn't install ubuntu-restriced-extras via package manager, e.g. Synaptic, to avoid dependencies problems. Also assuming the correct browser plugins should be available in this package.
