can only log into failsafe

I use kdm to login to x11. Now when I go to login I can only login to failsafe as when I try Gnome or KDE or any other windows manager it takes me right back to the login screen. When I log into failsafe I can run icewm-session or enlightenment. Is there something I can do to fix this issue?

**UPDATE** - after using wajig remove kdm I was able to use gdm to log into Gnome and KDE. I am still getting a permission error on .dmrc.

Try removing the .dmrc file. GDM will recreate this with appropriate permissions.
