Mac and Windows profiles, hosted on ubuntu

Asked by cammun

Hi,

I need to create a network, with both Windows XP and Mac OSX machines. The network needs to have roaming profiles, ie. I can see the same documents in Windows machine #1, as I can see in windows machine #2, and Mac machine #1, etc etc. Is there a way to use Ubuntu as a network Domain, and host the roaming profiles (which can be done in both Windows Server and Apple XServe, but I don't have the budget to cover the costs ;-{ )

I do not know how you do it with mac's, but you can have a roaming desktop with linux(by exporting / mounting /home from one computer onto another ... ). Samba can do home user profiles just like windows server. However, you cannot have an active directory using samba 3 (samba 4 is still in development). Please review the samba documentation.
