lost internet connection

Asked by volvie

I have recently for the first time, booted UBUNTU 8.10 from the Live CD in Demo mode. I had a quick look at all the features etc, browsed the internet using firefox, and all was good. I then restarted my pc, and booted back into Widows like i have been doing for the last 2 years. I noticed a message in the system tray saying that the network cable was unplugged. So i check all cables, and non are unplugged. I swaped ports on the modem and still no difference. I noticed that on the front of the modem where the network activity status light's normally flash, the light for the port that i was plugged into was off. I then looked at the rear of my pc where the cable plugs in, and also no flashing lights indicating activity within the network. There is definitely nothing wrong with my lead either, because i decided to reboot the pc using Ubuntu again, and booted in demo mode also, just like first time, and can browse the internet send/receive email etc.
As soon as i boot back into Windows, i get the message, 'network cable unplugged' and it isn't!!

can someone please help ASAP.

Thanks in advance.

When you boot the Live CD, there are no changes done to the PC nor windows at all

So it seems like a windows problem to me, are you sure you did not change anything in Windows ?

Yes i am sure, because i was using the internet fine only minutes before I booted from Ubuntu. I have looked at the internet connection properties within Windows, and everything appears to be normal.

Thanks for your help.

Perform a ping or tracert in your shell. In case it works the problem is off your PC. If it doesn't run some test software issued by your networks adapters manufacturer. Just in case nothing works reinstall the drivers and then check teh basic functionality again. Power off your PC completely before doing so and unplug your cables. Maybe your adapter is a bit weird and it's ROM is crap.

when any address is pinged, they all time out because there is no network connection. Think of it as if there were no leads plugged in, because this is how the pc is responding to anything that is done, even when there is a good, working lead plugged in.
