Thanks, and do you recommend the 64 bit version rather than the 32 bit?

Yes. It is to be recommended. The 64-bit-packages have more optimizations for the modern processors than the 32bit-versions.

And on a real server you might have about or more than 4GB of RAM. And that is only supported by 64bit-systems.
(Unless you build your own experimental kernel)

I think it's worth trying a dual-boot to compare 32bit with 64bit. My 64bit machine seems to work much better with 32bit Ubuntu but i only have 2Gb Ram

Tom is also right of course.
64-bit-programs tend to use a little more of ram than 32-bit-ones. So the "better-64-bit-performance" might become eaten by this leak.
So if you have 2GB of RAM or even less... it might indeed be better to use 32-bit. Especially if you want to use it as a desktop-system then.

But I'd still recommend 64-bit for a "server".

Also Wine is only 32bit and i ran into a few problems. Now i'm on 32bit Ubuntu i don't use Wine tho because the repositories are larger and i tend to find native linux equivalents or programs and they run much better too. I think this last point may have changed since i was on 64bit about 6months ago now which is an eon in Ubuntu lol

Good luck and try both at same time

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for marking that as "Solved".  I don't think i deserved the credit for that and it's not clear if the problem has been solved.  If you have fixed it then please let us know how, if you have the time.  Otherwise then it's all ok as it is.

Good luck, regards and thanks from
Tom :)
