Going to Use Linex for very First Time

Hi, Can anyone help me with mentioned below concerns?
Currently I am using windows, hence for sound and Ethernet purpose I have to download software from my motherboard CD(HP**PI945GCM) and these softwares are compatible only with windows. If I download Ubuntu, how can I run my Ethernet and how can I get sound in my P.C.???

when testing the sound it gives out a continuous whine - perhaps it is OK now but CD's cannot be played in Totem player.

Is there any other CD/DVD player or is there any other solution.

Try downloading sm player or vlc player both are very good players. Try downloading gstream plugins. Which motherboard do you have.
