ubuntu 8.04 hangs while working

i hav just installed ubuntu 8.04.
installation was sucessfull,but now i m facing the problem that
my pc hangs while working, mainly while running firefox or some video.

please reply for some solution.

pc config:
intel dual core 2.8ghz processor
two 512 mb ddr1 ram
80gb sata harddisk
ati graphic chipset.

occasionally firefox grays out for me too when adobe flash is tying up too many resources. If you disable flash that problem goes away :)
