dual software programs installed

Asked by davidzaq1

Hello,

I have ubuntu 16.04 on a Dell Laptop.

I was trying to upgrade the VLC player and Handbrake but now I have two of them installed.
If I go to the video file and right click it says open with.....and that point, I can see two handbrakes and two VLC's.
One of the one of the handbrakes and one of the VLC's do nothiing, if you click on them, they open but close right away.
Clicking on the other two work fine.

I don't know how to remove these two that don't work.

Also in the unity tab that shows installed software,
 there are 2 bleach bits,
2 image magic programs which I don't know what they are,
2 system settings,
2 software centers. a Ubuntu software-- which is the most current and opens right away and Ubuntu Software Center which doesnt load anything.
I think the Ubuntu Software is new for 16.04 and Ubuntu Software Center is for anything below 16l.04.

Also, there was 2 wine programs. I did a complete removal in Synaptic Package Manager but the packages are still in Unity.

It's a lot of stuff but I hope you can give me an idea how to remove double files and to get rid of files that are still here..

Thank you,

You are using a PPA for VLC. If the package maintainer has not made sure the launcher files overlap then you will see duplicate entries for the application.
I suggest you contact the PPA maintainer to inform.

You could remove VLC to remove all traces of it (including the launchers) then install the version only in the PPA version.

Alternatively, remove the PPA, remove VLC and then use the version from the official Ubuntu repository and have fewer issues

Hello,

Ok, how do I remove all traces of VLC including the ppa?

Doesn't the PPA add additional support that VLC does not support?

VLC does not have a version for Ubuntu 16.04. If I use the one in the official repository,I think it will be the older or last supported version. I thought this was the reason of adding the PPA's.

I hope you can help with this.
Thank you

"VLC does not have a version for Ubuntu 16.04" - This is not true. Why do you assume that this would be the case?

Apparently you have not understood the potential problems with PPAs.

The developers care to ensure that all packages in the official repositories for Ubuntu adequately work together.

A PPA is a personal package archive, where any person can publish software as he likes. You can never know how well the integration testing has been done.

The PPA that you are using is named 'videolan/master-daily', this sounds trustworthy, but nobody guarantees that this is really an official VLC distribution channel.

Hello,

I do not know.
I dud not even know there was a 2.0 and 3.0

I looked at the VLC website and the last Ubuntu version they supported was either 13.04 or 14.04
I'm not sure.

A post that I read said to add the PPA because VLC is updated by the PPA so I added the PPA just to
be sure if VLC is updated, to get those updates.

I am not sure if there is any difference.

Thank you
