I recently purchased a Gateway - FX Edition Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology(its a gaming laptop) and was wondering if Ubuntu would run more effeciently than the Vista 64 bit??

Asked by Kyle

i not too tech savvy so straightforward answers would be most helpful. I have a friend who runs Ubuntu but I dont know how it would hold up with a gaming laptop. Since its new id prefer not to install an operating system that would downgrade what I already have (vista 64 bit with sp1 preloaded). Anyone who responds I would much appreciate.
I'm not sure if it matters but heres the specs for my laptop---

Anything runs more efficiently than vista... I melted down my HP that came with vista and never turned back.

If your laptop is on this list : http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/list/?category=Laptop
it's certified for Ubuntu use. none of the Gateway laptops are listed, but that doesn't mean it won't work. Make sure you can completely reload your system if you fry it, and give it a try :)

I find it strange that you have bought a gaming laptop, and are wanting to install ubuntu.

It's fair enough comparing boot times, I/O performance and space used for install. But for me it's all about function. I dual boot as I still need Windows for games. I am using vista 64, and to be fair I have not had any problems. It is better than ubuntu 64 in that it can run 32bit programs out of the box no problem without any dodgy hacks. That's my only gripe with ubuntu.
