How do I replace a crashed Kubuntu partition with a new one?

Asked by Nackerman44

I am a new user to Kubuntu and am not sure what I did, but my computer will not start to the desktop anymore. It keeps going into what looks like my consol and I don't know any commands to get it out or fix the problem. If anyone could help me I would much appreciate it. I have tried a "startx" and that has not solved the problem and I recently figured out how to get into the aptitude and tried to update things but this still didn't work and deleted everything because it they were found broke. Is there a way that I can re-install kubuntu alongside my existing windows partition over where the now empty kubuntu selection is from an ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS desktop edition boot disk?

Use the Ubuntu Cd as a boot cd right into a "Live" desktop. Then go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

Use either search tool to kind "qtparted" - right click and install it and then go back up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Partition Editor

It's a dangerous tool tho. Very easy to delete all your Xp from here :( Take care. QtPartEd should show you the partitions on your hard-drive and a right click should allow you to "Check Partition"

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ah, reading through your postings it looks like you really might well need to reinstall Kubuntu. If you have data in the /home directory then it's probably best to copy it across into the Xp side. Following these directions should help set up the dual-boot again

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

If you can choose "Manual Partitioning" rather than "Guided" and then UNtick a box for each partition that says "Format Partition?" then hopefully none of your partitions will be wiped during the reformatting process and you'll just get everything back the way it was before you had problems ;) I find this very prone to user-error so backing up data is fairly essential.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

PS GPartEd was for Gnome - QtPartEd is for Kubuntu

Note that you'll need to set the "Mount Point" of the Kubuntu partition as /

/

is the root partition and its where folders such as

/home/nackerman44/documents

are built up from
