Hold the power-off button in for a few minutes. The hardware "On/Off" button should manage to close the machine down if held in for a couple of minutes.

It might be worth trying to update eveything first tho. Go up to the top taskbar and click on
System - Administration - Update Manager

If that doesn't work then just use the power-off button on the computer case.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

Few details that i forgot to mention in my previous post:

- System configuration:
    - Processor: Intel core 2 duo (E7300)
    - RAM: 2GB
    - Ubuntu version used: 8.04 LTS
    - Swap partition size: 512MB
    - Size of partition used to install Ubuntu: 10GB

- Have installed "CompizConfig Settings manager"
- Have installed all the updates
- I am able to restart the system successfully. But If I try to "Turn off" the system, the system starts "Turn off" process, but after some time it shows error message

*terminating all processes
Network manager:<WARN>nm_signal_handler():caught signal 15,shutting down normally
Network manager:<info>caught termination signal
Network manager:<debug>[1234288369.600936]nm_print_open_socks():open sockets list:

N m:<WARN> nm_hal_deinit(): libhal shutdown failed d:

*sending all processes to KILL the signal.... [OK]
*Unmounting all temporary file systems..... [OK]
*Deactivating swap.......... [OK]
*Un maintaing local file system..... [OK]

Please give solution to the above problem.
