ubuntu 8.10 hangs on login after install

Asked by Mickg

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a HP Compaq Evo D51S and it installed fine but when I try to login it hangs after I press enter after entrering the password. The mouse still responds but the keyboard freezes, I have left it for hours and nothing, the only thing you can do is reset it via the power switch.
Basically the screen is blank and only the cursor is showing.

I have run system test and confirmed the hardware is fine, and confirmed the image is also OK, I have reinstalled and the exact some thing happens.

I think its something to do with the video card and being unable to bring up the desktop, is there some troubling I can do or is it a known issues?

Please assist if possible.

The PC hardware is standard excluding the memory which has been bumped up to 512mb

I have the same problem on the same machine.

Does anyone know why 8.1 encounters this problem on the Compaq Evo D51S?

Mine has been running fine since I download Ubuntu 8.04 LTS in mid feb, give that a try. I have spoken to a few friends who have odd issues with 8.1 and all of them where resolved when they installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Give it a try and let us know how you go.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has been rock solid ever since.

8.04 LTS works great on my machine. I had no problems installing or running it.

I am still curious as to why 8.1 does not run. Maybe a video driver not supported by 8.1? When I ran 8.1 from the Live CD the desktop would only display in "Safe Graphics" mode. Also, when I tested my hardware using 8.1 the only test that failed was the video test (which makes me think that it is a video driver issue).

Since 8.1 does not run on the Evo D51S machine, I wonder if 9.04 will have the same problem.

I am new to Ubuntu and not much of a programmer, but I will keep researching as I learn Ubuntu.

Thanks for the advice about 8.04 LTS. This is the only forum that I found that gives useful information about this particular problem.

Yer I had a mate look at it and we come to the conclusion that it was the video driver, we found the smae also with the Live CD version.

Another mate had issues also with 8.1 with a sound card also, the LTS version seems to be the go.

Good point about 9.04, you upgrade first :)

After installing and running 8.04 with no problems I upgraded to 8.1 through the on board upgrade feature. I upgraded over the weekend and 8.1 runs fine on my Evo D51S. It seems that whatever issue the Live CD was unable to overcome, the automatic upgrade feature fixed any driver or other bug problem.

I am now curious to find out if I can upgrade to Jaunty without problems.

I upgraded a few weeks ago and all good on Jaunty (excluding on shutdown the internal speaks make a cracking sound).
I had no issues, I tried the live CD first and then did a complete reimage.

So all good I say, the speaker cracking is something I can put up with.
