Lost Wireless Internet connection following update to 8.04

Asked by papabehr

My (spare) computer is partitioned with Windows on one partition, and Ubuntu on the other. I was using it to learn Ubuntu.
My wireless internet connection was working fine until I updated to 8.04 "Hardy Heron". Now it does not connect to the internet with my Ubuntu partition, but does connect to the internet using my windowsME OS partition.
Everything else in the 8.04 Hardy Heron appears to work fine accept I cannot connect to the internet.
I have included the following information from my iwconfig printout and sudo lshw output:

hey, you might want to check out the troubleshooting page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/internet/C/troubleshooting.html
for more information on troubleshooting your wireless connection.
or the page on connecting to a wireless network:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/internet/C/wireless-connecting.html

Sorry, not much of an expert on wireless connections. try these pages.

Hi,

I recommend performing a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 (which has better wireless support) from a LiveCD session.

After installing and booting into the clean Ubuntu 8.10 harddisk installation, please proceed with the following commands, while having a wired connection to the wireless router.:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

If this does not work, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep illswitch

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here

Regards,

Mark

I connected my PC to my wireless router through an ethernet cable as instructed. I then ran the hardy "sudo apt-get update" and sudo apt-get upgrade". I then ran the "sudo aptitude install b43 fw-cutter".

I can see the b43 fw-cutter as installed in the synaptic package manager, but it did not load the b43-firmware, as I can see.

Everything works fine with the LAN line, and I connected to the internet with no problem.

I shut down, disconnected the LAN line, rebooted and tried the wireless, and it would not connect.

I ran the commands as listed below, and below is the outputs;

Can some help me get connected please:

I have ordered a desktop CD of ubuntu 8.10, but it probably won't be here for 4-6 weeks. When I originally installed 7.1 in Jan. 2008, I tried to download, but it was unsuccessful because my computer is so slow. I finally got the wireless to work on the 7.1. Now I can't get that CD to Install.

Any ideas on how to get the wireless to work on the 8.04, since that is what I am stuck with for awhile.

When I type "ndiswrapper -l", it states:

bcmwl5: driver installed
device (14E4:4320) present (alternate driver: ssb)

If the driver is present, why won't it connect through the wireless??

Hi,

You said wireless worked before upgrading to 8.04. Do you still have the kernels installed from Ubuntu 7.10? Can you test all the older kernels in your grub bootlist to find one that gives a working wireless connection?

Regards,

Mark

I am unclear what you mean by kernels associated with brub bootlist? I am relatively new to Linux.

I very much would like to connect to the internet wirelessly as well. I am new to ubuntu, I have 8.04 and as far as I can tell, it has been terrible. I can see there are several people here who are having the exact same issue I am with no results. It obviously is giving alot of users the same issue. I can't get mine to get off the loopback of 127.0.0.1. Nothing I do and no one I have contacted seems to be able to help. I am using ubuntu through a wired internet connection. It is installed on a Dell Mini 9.

So far I have determined that all hardware is installed and "working" but no wireless. If anyone has a honest to God answer on this I would appreciate it. I too am waiting on my disks to arrive in hopes that a better version of ubuntu will help solve this issue.

I have also tried the hardware testing and all network interfaces show up as being installed.

The only thing I don't have is any kind of Device Manager to help with verifying that all drivers are properly installed. I followed the instructions on how to get to the device manager however it is not listed. Is there a code I need to put into the terminal command to get it?

Thanks in advance for any help on this.
