native mobile broadband supported under Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by TomS

Are there any mobile broadband (i.e. 3g) options available in the UK that will work with 8.10 without messing around with drivers, etc? This is for a laptop (plenty of usb ports for a dongle) used by a complete linux novice.

Yes just plug into the usb and then you get a configuration wizard that asks you what your network is.
You select your network and it connects very simple.

hope that helps

I know that is how it should work in theory, but have seen plenty of posts on forums about certain dongles not working. Does anyone know if this is the case?

It works out of the box since 8.10 most of the major networks are preconfigured
I know that vodafone o2 and 3 work others I dont know. The only way to know is
to try it out on the live cd.

Do I need to change the APN or username or password? I am failing to get an Orange pay monthly dongle to work...

Did the wizard open when you inserted the dongle?

No

I think it is an Icon 225 usb dongle

Then go up to the network icon and click on it and select configure.

yes, I can do that, but I assume I am not putting in the right username/password/APN information, and Orange have not specified what these should be. Or, if I am putting in the right credentials, the dongle is not recognised by Ubuntu

The username is ppp by default and the password is blank by default and the apn is set by the wizard when you set it up in ubuntu.
If you set a password put the sim into a phone and remove it. Then try again.

Can you help with this problem?
